After undergoing a host of structural renovations over the past decade, the Elizabeth Public Library stands as a reminder of the generosity of Andrew Carnegie, who gave it to the town of Elizabeth in the early part of the 20th century. The library, which houses a variety of special collections-including those related to business and consumer health-provides Internet service and operates from four locations. Library card holders can go to the facility's Web page, which provides access to a vast number of books, articles, audiovisual media and data. |

Union Square
Elizabeth Avenue
www.elizabethavenue.org
Union Square on Elizabeth Avenue is best known for being the site of the Continental Outpost of the battle of June 8, 1780. Five thousand British Regulars arrived in Port Elizabeth and marched down Elizabeth Avenue-known as one of the oldest streets in North America-to attack General Washington and the Continental Army. Fifteen Elizabeth Minutemen, positioned around Union Square, held them off and even wounded their general, Lord Stirling. The Minutemen continued to attack, delaying the British enough for Washington's Army to survive, eventually driving them out of New Jersey. The area is designated by a marker and statue of a Minuteman. |
