Step Into Elizabeth History

Elizabeth has a rich history that dates back to the time before the American Revolution. One of the most fun things to do in New Jersey is to check out the many historic features of our modern day streets. Forget museums. In Elizabeth, we spend our day to day living among our history.

Start off on the Elizabeth River Trail, which features the work of local artists telling the 350-year history of our vibrant city. It’s the perfect introduction to our past. Just down the road you’ll find Boxwood Hall, which has been host to some of American history’s top figures (George Washington had lunch there on his way to be inaugurated as president!) A few steps away you’ll also find the Bonnell House, a showcase of the carpentry skills of Nathaniel Bonnell who built the house in the late 1600s and was one of Elizabeth’s (then Elizabethtown) founders. Bonnell House is one of the oldest homes in the entire state of New Jersey!

Lunch at Urban Griddle

All that American history is sure to work up an American appetite. Stop in for some lunch at Urban Griddle, where you’ll find delicious American comfort food and local craft beers. If you fancy a fun cocktail, they’ve got that covered too. You’ll enjoy it all while surrounded by 150-year-old reclaimed barn wood that contrasts with the oh-so-urban corrugated tin roof. If you need that little afternoon pick-me-up, their trained baristas are there to hook you up with a jolt of caffeine.

Unwind at Bodies & Faces Day Spa

Don’t forget to include a massage appointment at Bodies & Faces Day Spa in your Elizabeth itinerary. Since 1988 Bodies & Faces has provided Elizabeth with 4000 square feet of relaxation and pampering. The four-story facility is a full-service spa that offers something for everyone. It’s the perfect spot to rest after a long morning of seeing the sites of our city.
