Fewer than 15 miles from Manhattan, the 11.69-square-mile city of Elizabeth, New Jersey, is often paired with its northern neighbor Newark for its proximity to Newark Liberty International Airport and the New Jersey Turnpike. Elizabeth served as the first capital of the state, and today is a thriving service, manufacturing and retail center. Although the city is not one of New Jersey’s top tourist destinations, it does draw visitors to its numerous shopping options, historic sites, green areas and notable festivals.
