Sports and Recreation in Elizabeth, NJ

As the playground of New Jersey, the city of Elizabeth offers the ideal space to play practically any sport. We have skate parks, ice rinks, ball fields, and more, whether you’re planning a date or a family fun outing.

        Summer Fun

Elizabeth’s Department of Recreation organizes interactive day camps for children and adults, with varied activities like ceramics and flower classes to suit any tastes. The Department of Recreation also runs a public pool and other water leisure sports from the 4th of July through Labor Day. When the kids need to cool off, Mickey Walker Spray Park is free to Elizabeth residents every day of the week!

        Warinanco Park Adventures

First off, Warinanco Park is huge! With a running track, fitness course, bike path, and more, there are plenty of options for cardio. Athletes can enjoy the tennis courts as well as the soccer, football, and baseball fields.

If athletics don’t attract you, consider renting a paddle boat for a couple of hours to enjoy the lake and scenic cherry blossoms, magnolias, azaleas, and other blooms in season. As summer approaches, there are playgrounds and a water spray area for children—but the park’s biggest attractions are definitely the cherry blossoms and the seasonal Warinanco Indoor Ice Skating Center, which opens each winter.

        Fun for Kids

The Where Angels Play Foundation was started by Bill Lavin, a retired Elizabeth firefighter, and they have since built 26 playgrounds in America in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Shooting. The playground at Veteran’s Memorial Park features playground replicas of police cars and a fire truck that faces the NYC skyline across the river.

        Play Hardcore

For thrill-seekers, Elizabeth can offer a number of intense experiences! Our skate park at Mattano Park gives skateboard enthusiasts the space to push their limits on a half-pipe, vert ramp, rails, and stairs. The green space around the park also features ball fields and a view of the Elizabeth River.

        Just Enjoy the Outdoors

With more than 45 different local parks, it can be nice just to get outside and enjoy the natural beauty of Elizabeth. If you want to take a walk while also learning about history, we recommend the audio-guided “Elizabeth at the Crossroads” walking tour or the Elizabeth River Trail across town.
