The Elizabeth Peruvian Parade brings family and friends to enjoy this celebration of Peruvian cultural heritage and civic engagement.
The parade will include creatively decorated parade floats as well as performances showcasing traditional Peruvian dance and music. Beginning at Elizabeth’s Union Square at the intersection of Elizabeth Avenue and High Street, the parade will proceed northwest along Elizabeth Avenue to Winfield Scott Plaza and end at Elizabeth City Hall.
Kick off the Peruvian heritage festivities days before the parade. Join Peruvians for Progress for the flag-raising at Elizabeth City Hall for a flag-raising! New date coming soon.
Want to truly keep the Peruvian party going? Take your group to eat at Tumi, a well-loved Peruvian restaurant in Elizabeth!
Peruvians for Progress is a community-focused, non-profit organization founded in New Jersey in April 2000. The organization’s purpose is to unite the Peruvian community and contribute to its development in the United States. Peruvians for Progress promotes the unified participation of Peruvian-Americans through events which support community success as well as those that sustain and celebrate Peruvian culture. In addition to the Peruvian Parade held in Elizabeth each summer, the organization also helps Peruvian-American high school students prepare for college via informational sessions and through the awarding of merit-based scholarships. For more information about Peruvians for Progress, visit their website.
July is the month to celebrate Peruvian heritage and culture and it’s not uncommon to see families of Peruvian heritage raising the flag of Peru all month long. Peruvian Independence Day is celebrated annually on July 28th to commemorate the date when newly named Protector of Peru General José de San Martín declared independence from the Spanish Empire in 1821.
In Peru, the Fiestas Patrias celebration spans two days. The 28th is day one and includes Peruvian flag raising ceremonies and 21-cannon salutes at dawn, a Catholic Te Deum service, and the Peruvian President’s address to the nation. During an election year, July 28th is the day the new president swears in and begins to serve. Military and police parades take place on the second day.
